Meeting the needs of Ohio’s
Long-term Care Professionals since 1946

Education Overview

OHCA / OCAL / OCID members strive for quality and performance excellence. This year’s innovative programming supports that goal. With sessions designed to bring you the most-up-to-date information on the issues affecting your facility daily, this year’s sessions are just what busy long-term care professionals need.

A focus on interdisciplinary quality education is at the forefront of the OHCA / OCAL / OCID Annual Convention. To accomplish this, the OHCA Convention Task Force has made a number of exciting changes and opportunities available to attendees.

1. Might We Suggest (Click here)
With over 100 educational sessions to choose from, narrowing your selection and determining which team members should attend the convention is a difficult task. We have created these listings to help guide your selections.

2. Expanded session time and clear definitions of level of content
In an effort to allow more advanced programming to our members, the OHCA Convention schedule of events will now include the ability for more thorough program in an expanded time frame of 3-hour sessions as well as the ability to attend 1 or 1.5 hour sessions that start at an advanced knowledge level. In addition to advanced level sessions, we also scheduled basic and intermediate level programming because a portion of our audience attends the convention to learn about things outside of their day to day routines, to help train a new staff member or just get the basics on a particular topic area. Please refer to the definitions of levels listed for each session. Program faculty used these definitions when creating their program content.

  • Basic: Assumes little or no prior knowledge of the area(s) covered. The focus of the activity is to increase knowledge and application by the participant.
  • Intermediate: Assumes a general knowledge of the topic area(s) covered. The focus is to enhance knowledge and application of the participant.
  • Advanced: Assumes thorough knowledge of the area(s) covered. The focus is a synthesis of recent advances and future directions.

3. Redefined Program Topic Areas to allow for more interdisciplinary programming
Quality educational programming is a core mission of the OHCA/OCAL Annual Convention. We have redefined the program topic areas to create an interdisciplinary approach to the many challenges facing providers today. Each of the 100+ educational programs offered during the three day event, was selected based on a thorough review of speaker credentials, objectives and educational content. The program schedule was created to provide something for each member of your staff to further enhance their skills. Topics covered in this years programming include the following:

  • Assessment & Care Planning: Proper clinical assessment and data collection is a vital component of skilled nursing facilities, assisted living communities and DD residential service providers. Programs in this topic area will emphasize the skills necessary to properly assess and record the care provided in your facility. Topics can relate to nurses, dietary staff, social workers, activity professionals, therapists and many other members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Business Development: Facilities filled with happy, well cared for paying residents are what drives our business. Programs in this area will focus on marketing the facility admissions, customer service and resident satisfaction as well as alternative business models.
  • Care Practices: The success of LTC is directly tied to the skills and professionalism of care professionals and staff. Programs in this topic area recognize the importance of clinical experience and seek to provide cutting-edge and implementable practices to be taken back to the facility or applied to your own professional development. Care practice sessions can relate to nurses, dietary staff, social workers, therapists and many other members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Human Resource/Labor Relations: The heart of quality long term care is its workforce. Programs in this topic area will emphasize strategies to evaluate and improve workforce turnover and retention; updates on human resource law; and many more.
  • Leadership Excellence: How facility leaders function and communicate has a tremendous impact on both customer and staff satisfaction. Programs in this topic area will emphasize leadership in long term care as a means of enhancing the living and work environment and overall organizational culture.
  • Operations & Finance: Navigating the complex world of Medicare and Medicaid is a challenge that requires an understanding of many detailed state and federal rules and regulations. Both programs play an important role in sustaining quality care. In addition, maintaining a healthy bottom line through best practices in collections, admissions, reimbursement maximization and smart business growth are all important areas of discussion.
  • Person Centered Care/Culture Change: Person-centered care is a philosophical approach to long-term care that honors and respects the voice of people living in LTC facilities and those working closest with them. It involves a continuing process of listening, trying new things, seeing how they work, and changing things in an effort to individualize care and de-institutionalize the long-term care environment.
  • Regulatory & Survey: LTC facilities operate under a myriad of state and federal regulations and undergo substantial oversight through the survey process. The regulatory aspects of operating a skilled nursing facility, assisted living community or DD residential care organization will be emphasized in this topic area. Please keep in mind that regulatory & survey topics can relate to nurses, dietary staff, social workers , activity professionals, environmental services, therapists, administrators and many other members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Risk Management: This topic area will focus attention on current issues and/or situations that may create potential risk for providers in today’s healthcare delivery environment.
