The OHCA Pioneer Award is designed to recognize Ohioans influential in the development and advancement of long-term care programs, education, professionalism or ideals. The Awards honor the commitment of these individuals to excellence in long-term care services.

L. BRUCE LEVERING
Bruce Levering started his service to the long term care profession May 1, 1956. He immediately joined the Ohio Nursing Home Association, which later became the Ohio Health Care Association. Bruce believed every long term care facility should be a member to voice their concerns and participate in the learning process of how to operate a long term care facility. At the time, no manual existed for reference as regulatory rule development was just beginning.
Bruce served on virtually all OHCA committees, and served as a District Chairman for many hears. He served as OHCA President from 1962 – 64, and was an officer of the American Health Care Association. Bruce was a leader in the effort to install fire protection systems in each facility.
Until his passing, Bruce was Chairman of the Board of Levering Management, Inc., which owns and operates nursing facilities, assisted living facilities and independent senior living facilities throughout North Central Ohio. Bruce’s wife Joan is also active in the company, and was licensed as a nursing home administrator in 1974.
Bruce instilled in each Levering Management facility the determination to provide the best care to family members, friends and community, ensuring a trust to provide a home away from home. The long term care profession has a compassionate component, and Bruce was an exemplary model of dedication to the progress of long term care for over 46 years.
