Michael J. Scharfenberger Pioneer awards The OHCA Pioneer Award is designed to recognize Ohioans influential in the development and advancement of long-term care programs, education, professionalism or ideals. The Awards honor the commitment of these individuals to excellence in long-term care services.





MICHAEL J. SCHARFENBERGER

For more than 30 years, Michael J. Scharfenberger has been at the forefront of long-term care services in Ohio.

Scharfenberger started his career in the long-term care profession in 1975 as an administrative assistant in a new rehabilitation oriented SNF. He received his nursing home administrator’s license in 1977, and opened a new 145-bed SNF and rehabilitation center in 1979. He is now Vice President, co-founder and Secretary of Nursing Care Management of America, a LTC management company which owns and manages nine facilities in Ohio and West Virginia, and provides consulting services to long-term care providers.

Scharfenberger was elected to the OHCA Board in 1987, and has served in a variety of positions as Committee and District Chair, Vice President, and served as President from 1995 – 1996. He currently serves on the Board of Directors as Chairman of OHCA District 1, and is a member of the Executive Committee, and Chairman of the OHCA Political Action Committee. He is also a former member of the AHCA Board of Directors.

In his other activities, he is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Administrators, and was appointed by Governor Robert Taft as a member of the Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators in 1999. He became Chairman of the BENHA Board in 2000, and continues to serve in that capacity.

Scharfenberger was a founder and member of the Board of Directors of Pharmco, Inc., an institutional pharmacy specializing in services to long-term care facilities and has operations in Ohio, Missouri, Florida and California. He is currently on the Board of Directors and Shareholders of Hospice of Southwest Ohio.

His experience and detailed knowledge of construction, development and nursing facility administration make him uniquely qualified in the long-term care field, and he has earned the respect of his peers as a knowledgeable professional.
