The OHCA Pioneer Award is designed to recognize Ohioans influential in the development and advancement of long-term care programs, education, professionalism or ideals. The Awards honor the commitment of these individuals to excellence in long-term care services.

STEPHEN G. COCHRAN
Steve Cochran grew up in long-term care. Following a brief stint as a high school teacher, he began his career as an administrator for a family-owned facility. Once involved in long-term care, he quickly moved into leadership with the Ohio Health Care Association. Steve served as Chairman of the OHCA legislative and convention committees, following which he served as Secretary, Treasurer and Vice President of the Association.
He assumed the role of OHCA President in 1974. In 1977, he was hired as Executive Vice President of OHCA, taking the helm as the leader of the Association staff. For 20 years under his guidance, the Association and its members benefited from his vision and leadership.
Steve led OHCA through the turbulent Nursing Home Commission hearings in the late 70s, and the development of a new reimbursement system in 1979. During his tenure, the Association grew to more than 700 members, and he was instrumental in developing the Educational Foundation of OHCA, which provides education and scholarships for long-term care professionals.
Steve left behind a legacy of growth and innovation. He helped build an organization that is recognized in Ohio and across the country as a strong, effective advocate for long-term care providers and for the residents they serve.
